New 'Footloose' TV Spots Bust A Move
by Danica Davidson Last evening in the MTV Video Music Honours, two new TV spots first showed for Vital Pictures and MTV Films' own remake of Footloose. Like a remake from the 1984 film starring Kevin Sausage, its developed lots of hype like a stylish latest version towards the classic movie. The very first video runs in a scant 33 seconds, but you will get much more of an understanding for that movie within the second video, which runs just a little on the minute. A few of the moments overlap within the two videos, but dont think theyre the identical, because theyre not. Within the story, Boston teen Ren McCormack moves to some rural farm community where dancing and noisy music are frowned upon, as you would expect. Actually, Ren is informed that dancing is illegal (though only when they get caught, its stated). However, he thinks that rules are intended to be damaged, which creates the relaxation from the film. He might get bothered with a cop for driving with noisy music playing, but thats only the beginning of his rebellion from this small cities traditions. Apart from all of the music and dancing, additionally you see some flourishing romance between Ren local girl Ariel, despite what Ariels father might say concerning the situation. And theres a fiery explosion! The Footloose remake hits theaters this October. Exactly what do you think about both of these new "Footloose" TV spots? Google TV Launching In Europe Early 2012
Saying that a Google TV announcement is imminent, Eric Schmidt made an appearance at the Edinburgh International TV Festival as he filled in for Shine Group founder Elisabeth Murdoch as keynote speaker. During Friday’s MacTaggart Lecture, given for the first time by a television industry outsider, the Google executive chairman said Google TV plans to launch in Europe early next year, with the UK a top priority. Many more partners are expected to join the fledgling TV service soon, Schmidt said, and the company is already in talks with UK broadcasters. He said U.S. networks that balked at Google TV earlier this year haven’t reversed their position, and hopes the service won’t face a similar problem in Europe. In his keynote, Schmidt also named three trends to watch: mobile, local and social — a nod to Google’s recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility as well as a desire to personalize TV content and services. “Soon, your typical Internet user wont be indoors with a PC; theyll be out and about on their cell phone,” Schmidt said. “Reflecting this, new genres of online content and services are emerging. If content is king, context is its crown. … And if you think all this is exciting, or frightening, remember, this is only the beginning. In technological terms, were scarcely at the end of the first act of the Internet age.”

New 'Star Trek' TV Pitch Is Within Early Development, Particulars Revealed
David Promote is probably not voyaging where no males have gone before, but he is really coming back to lengthy untouched territory together with his new "Star Trek" pitch. Apparently Promote, who's the mind from the sci-fi production company 1947 Entertainment, continues to be focusing on a "Trek" television pitch since 2006. He and also the late Kevin Severson acquired the idea, and after Severson's dying this year, Promote has ongoing to try and make their dream a real possibility. According to Foster's interview using the folks at TrekWeb, he's getting pretty near to making that happened: "The series concept is fully developed, susceptible to change obviously, having a solid 5-7 year series plan, pilot script along with a conceptualized finale that expects to define 'Star Trek' for decades, extensive character bios, costume and ship/set designs, and much more ... This can be a drastic departure in the typical 8-10 page management of the formerly pitched Star Trek series ideas that haven't incorporated a pilot script." The timing from the series continues to be considered too, so don't be concerned about this conflicting using the current mythology from the "Star Trek" world. Foster's story is placed after "Voyager," and will not conflict with J.J. Abrams' film series since that's occur another timeline. Though he's spoken to CBS about his suggestions for a possible reboot, Promote stated he has not formally pitched the network at this time around. This is not the very first time Promote has tried to reboot a vintage sci-fi television series. He labored with Richard Hatch to try and make "Battlestar Galactica: The 2nd Coming" in the late 1990's, but that project never found fruition. He's trying again with this particular "Star Trek" series, and expects to come back the franchise to creator Gene Roddenberry's original vision. "The series is extremely vitalized having a much more youthful cast, and uses cutting-edge future technologies with recently imagined effects and fashions. It offers Klingons, Ferengi, Andorians, Vulcans, Trill, and much more,Inch he stated. "The Klingons are becoming very restless because the Praxis incident forced them arrive at the peace tables, and have finished needing to depend about the Federation for support. The Ferengi have found a huge new resource which has powered them towards instant riches and energy beyond anything they've formerly experienced." Not intrigued enough? Promote offered up this additional pitch for that series, "If evil used the face area of the hero, can you recognize it? If freedom arrived the likeness of the oppressors, can you accept it? Should you be your personal enemy, who does be victorious? Will you be thinking about the "Star Trek" series Promote is pitching? Inform us within the comments section below or on Twitter!

Online game amps up Dolby's new music effort
Thomas DolbyThomas Dolby, whose 1980s hits "She Blinded Me With Science" and "Hyperactive" cemented his status as a pop icon, decided to step away from the music business in the early '90s and forge another fruitful career as a Silicon Valley entrepreneur. His company, Beatnik Inc., invented the ringtone synthesizer embedded in billions of mobile phones, and he served as music director for the California-based TED conferences, a renowned lecture series named for its roots in technology, entertainment and design. Now back in his native U.K. and retired from Beatnik at age 52, Dolby is gearing up to release his first album in more than two decades, titled "A Map of the Floating City," which is accompanied by an online multimedia video game."The Floating City" allows players to use Web browsers, social networks, smart phones and tablets to explore a fictional Google map, forming tribes and trading relics in a sea-going barter society while interacting with Dolby's music and winning concert tickets and other prizes.Dolby, who has produced albums for Joni Mitchell and Prefab Sprout and has been nominated for five Grammys, says the game currently has about 4,000 players that will influence the direction of the new album."The album is sort of like a soundtrack to the game," he says. "A lot of the game is driven by the players themselves. It's kind of a collaborative fiction environment, so what the players democratically decide is the truth becomes the truth. A lot of the songs have stories to them and I'm a bit reluctant to finish the stories until I see how the game unfolds."During his 20 years away from the music biz, Dolby noticed that his online fan forums continued to flourish, creating mythologies based on the characters in his songs, with some people claiming to actually be the characters."Looking at online forums and my core fanbase, I realized they love the mythology in my songs and the richness of the stories and the characters," Dolby says. "But making a video seemed very 20th century somehow -- it's a very passive, one-way experience. People aren't buying music and watching movies as much but they're spending a lot of time playing games and a lot of time in social networks. So it seemed to me I needed to find a 21st century idiom in which to create an immersive environment where people could bury themselves in that mythology."In "Floating City" Dolby departs from his trademark synth-driven pop sound to experiment with an array of musical textures, including honky-tonk piano and fiddle, classical guitar flourishes and jazzy saxophone solos. That said, Dolby fans will immediately recognize his literate, storytelling, songwriting style and the gorgeous soundscapes he effortlessly creates. The album features several notable guests including Mark Knopfler, Regina Spektor and Imogen Heap.Dolby recruited game designer Andrea Phillips and longtime friend J.J. Abrams, director and creator of "Alias" and "Lost," to advise him on the direction of the game."You can tell from the game there's a very strong flavor of J.J.'s 'Lost' worlds and the whole mystery behind everything he does," says Dolby, who traveled to Santa Monica to meet Abrams and his staff at Bad Robot Prods. to talk through ideas for the game.Although the current cycle of the game is due to culminate in late August so Dolby can complete the album and dole out prizes (including a private concert for the winning team), he envisions it entering a new phase and taking on a life of its own. Dolby plans to offer pre-concert lectures about the game when he tours the U.S. following the album's October release. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Charlize Theron's Having a Rough Morning in the First Pic from Jason Reitman's 'Young Adult'
If you loved 'Juno' as much as we did back in 2007, then now is the time to start getting excited for director Jason Reitman's and screenwriter Diablo Cody's big screen reunion in the upcoming 'Young Adult.' Even though it's release date is only four months away, Reitman's been pretty tight-lipped about his fourth directorial effort and there haven't been many updates to report on since filming started, but it looks like all that might be changing now that we've got our first look at Charlize Theron in the leading role. From what we've gathered, 'Young Adult' is about a teen lit author named Mavis Gary (Theron) who returns home to win back her high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson) who's now married with kids. When things don't go as planned, Gary finds herself reconnecting with a old classmate (Patton Oswalt) who's still reveling in his high school days. So go ahead and check out the first image of Theron's return to the acting world since 2009's 'The Road.' Still have to wait until December 16 for 'Young Adult' to hit theaters, but since Reitman has never done us wrong and it's been too long since we've seen Theron as a leading lady, we're excited to see more. So what do you think of the first look at 'Young Adult?' [via /Film]

Johnny Depp's 'Lone Ranger' Shut Down
And Johnny Depp as Tonto actually sounded like it could be fun. The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that 'The Lone Ranger' -- starring Armie Hammer as the masked hero of the Old West, with Depp as his faithful companion -- has had its production canceled, just a few months shy of the October shooting date. The reason: Money. (Is it ever anything else?) After the poor box office performance of 'Cowboys & Aliens,' Disney is gun-shy about financing a big-budget Western, not to mention they have spent hundreds of millions of dollars already on both the Mars-set adventure 'John Carter' and the now-shooting 'Oz, the Great and Powerful.' 'Ranger' director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer couldn't settle on the budget estimate the studio was giving them, so the Mouse House figuratively took the movie behind the shed and put it out of its misery. What's the consolation prize that Disney is offering up: More 'Pirates of the Caribbean' of course! (Is it ever anything else?) Disney has made it a priority to get another Jack Sparrow adventure on the big screen as soon as possible. But Depp said back in May "It's not something where I would say, 'Let's shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012,' we should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me." With Disney pushing back even harder to get Depp to commit to the fifth 'Pirates' movie right away, THR speculates that it could push him off the project altogether -- at which point, Disney will probably re-boot the series or do something else completely cynical. Canceling 'Long Ranger' has also put even more strain on the Bruckheimer-Disney relationship which hasn't returned as many high-profit results as it used to (example one: Nic Cage in 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice'). As for the money spent in pre-production trying to get 'Lone Ranger' filmed, that will just disappear into the ether. It's just money, people can afford to throw it around.

The best spinner's Cancels 'Lopez Tonight'
The writing have been about the wall for George Lopez's late-evening show on The best spinner's. There is speculation the network was likely to cancel the show this past year, but Conan O'Brien was adamant on Lopez adhering around so he isn't regarded as the man who pressed Lopez out. Lopez Tonight got a stay of execution, however the show, initially produced by Telepictures like a syndicated talk show, will finish its two-season run tomorrow evening. Lopez Tonight is not succeeding within the rankings, especially after moving to night time last fall to support Conan, lately calculating 400,000 audiences along with a .2 18-49 rating for original episodes. There has been gossips that The best spinner's had attempted to create the show larger and fewer ethnic. For some reason, both late-evening shows with minority hosts, Lopez Tonight and BET's The Mo'Nique Show, bit the dust in the past two days. This is actually the official statement from The best spinner's: "The best spinner's has arrived at the difficult decision to not order another season of Lopez Tonight. '24' Movie: There's An 'Institutional Desire' To Do It
FOXKiefer Sutherland in "24" It's been more than a year since Fox's 24 ended its run, but buzz surrounding a big-screen feature picking up where the Kiefer Sutherland thriller left off still lives large. Showrunner Howard Gordon, on hand Thursday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour to promote Showtime's Homeland, noted that conversations are "definitely happening" to take the franchise to the big screen. "There's an institutional desire to do it," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "I know Kiefer wants to do it, we all want to do it. It's just about finding the right script and not just doing it to do it." STORY: Howard Gordon: "The Timing of [Showtime's 'Homeland'] is Signicant, Accidental and Fortuitous' Gordon, reflecting on the dramatic thriller's conclusion, noted that completing the series was an uphill battle and, while proud of the work he's done, is nervous about what a feature would entail. "It's something that I think if it doesn't happen, I will not be heartbroken," he said. "I'm very proud of that run and how it ended. It was very hard to get it to the finish line with some kind of grace in closure. Why mess it up? But if you find the right story ..." Critic's Notebook: NBC at TCA
Jason Isaacs It's showtime for Bob Greenblatt, who spent Monday in the annual TCA press tour showing his first fall slate of recent shows (most of them started through the last regime) as chairman from the lengthy-unhappy NBC Entertainment. Far from Showtime, the pay funnel he effectively designed for seven years with cutting-edge buzz shows like Dexter, Weeds and also the Tudors. "I certainly don't wish to turn NBC into Showtime," he told the area of experts and reporters in the Beverly Hilton. "However I would like to bring a few of the creative vitality to NBC that people had at Showtime. We have to get it done in ways that's really broad and commercial," instead of the more dark niche implies that typify a lot of cable. "The devil's within the particulars." Want more fall TV news? Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now! Coming off a summer time where America's Got Talent is topping the rankings along with a midseason in which the Voice emerged like a surprise hit, NBC now must strike gold within the scripted arena, Greenblatt's niche dating to his days like a producer (Six Ft Under) and development professional at Fox (The X-Files). "You just need to find stuff that get people to actually want to watch. The good thing about the truth shows, the unscripted shows, is that they are, in lots of ways, more event-like." And he isn't speaking The Big Event-like. "We have got to determine some clever methods to simply make these scripted shows as, I'll quote, 'must-see' once we can." The turnaround will not sacrifice quality, it will not be simple or pretty, also it will not happen rapidly. This year, Greenblatt's vision is not even prone to start full gear until midseason, when the love project Smash - a drama he initially produced for Showtime about the building of a Broadway musical - premieres alongside the return from the Voice. (NBC confirmed the second season from the Voice will launch behind the Super Bowl on Sunday, February. 5, with Smash opening a evening later following Voice's Monday evening two-hour time-period premiere.) With unusual candor, Greenblatt stated Smash "might be probably the most adventurous reveal that we all do, also it ultimately might be probably the most narrow show we all do. It's difficult to understand where we are going to be released about the continuum there." Just like dangerous may be the gripping midseason drama Awake (not scheduled), in regards to a detective who emerges from the terrible vehicle accident, caught between two possible dream mobile phone industry's: one out of which his wife died, departing him just one parent and also the other by which his boy perished. That certain really feels as though a cable show. (Awake did not show up throughout Greenblatt's presentation. Reckon that can watch for January's press tour.) From the fall shows he inherited, Greenblatt pointed toward the Americanization of fabled British police drama Prime Suspect, starring Maria Bello, as "an excellent illustration of the type of franchise reveal that feels fresh because we put an extremely iconoclastic character in the heart of it, and contains a directorial vision along with a author vision inside it.Inch Could it be as distinctive because the Helen Mirren classic? Not from what we have seen to date, however, it most likely can not afford to become and aspire to survive on NBC on Thursdays. More impressions from NBC's trip to the press tour: BUNNY SHRUG: "I believe the comparison to Mad Males kind of finishes at the time of the '60s," stated among the producers from the period pastiche The Playboy Club. No argument here. (The show will air Mondays at 10/9c.) A muddled and murky mixture of misogyny, music and Chicago mob intrigue, starring Eddie Cibrian like a poor man's Jon Hamm, Playboy has been suspended by one Utah affiliate that objected to glorifying the Hefner brand, though as the second from the show's producers noted, "It's mild in comparison to numerous stuff that's on tv.Inch Again, no argument. Playboy's session got on a rocky start as numerous experts recoiled in the producers' assertion that Club was in some way "strengthening" in the depiction of Playboy Rabbits - who they required pains to differentiate from Play pals. The cast rapidly continued the defensive, the Rabbits acting a lot more like Killer Bunnies. "I believe it is simply chauvinistic to deny women their sexuality," stated Amber Heard, whose newbie Bunny character unintentionally skewers a mobster together with her stiletto, leading to Cibrian in the future to save the day. Inside a joke-filled stand-up intro to NBC's day, Community's Joel McHale known to Playboy Club as "Mad Males with breasts." It may be more accurate to think about this as "Mad Males for breasts." COMEDY TONIGHT: "Comedy is really a goal for all of us,Inch Greenblatt declared. "We have gotta convey more from it, and i believe we have reached transplant them back of Thursday." And that's why two new comedies are airing on Wednesday, representing the very best and worst of NBC's new sitcom development. The very best: Up Through The Night (8/7c), created by Lorne Michaels and produced by Saturday Evening Live vet Emily Spivey, starring Christina Applegate and can Arnett as new parents whose me-first lifestyle is upended through the baby aboard. Maya Rudolph steals the show as Applegate's self-absorbed, desperate boss - a job that's growing inside a promising fine-tuning from the pilot, turning her from the p.r. professional right into a The famous host oprah-aspirant daytime talk-show host. Spivey based this series by herself existence like a new mother by having an exacting TV job, and all sorts of three stars have youthful kids that belongs to them. Arnett stated he'd two sick boys in your own home: "I had been legitimately up all last evening." And Rudolph just delivered her third. "I simply were built with a child and I am in a little of the fog. I am not likely to lie, however.... I pumped in regards to a half-hour ago." If you would like authenticity, here's your show. Bad it isn't area of the Thursday selection, where it might be more prone to get observed. (On Wednesdays, it's facing ABC's established comedies and Fox's mega-over-blown The X Factor. But as Greenblatt wryly stated, "Whenever period virtually on any evening is much like waiting in the center of the 405 [freeway].") The worst: Free Agents (8:30/7:30c), a toxic place of work comedy in regards to a divorced sad sack (Hank Azaria) who sleeps by having an discontentedly widowed co-worker (Kathryn Hahn) and both live to be sorry. A dark tone is smarmy, the figures charmless, and also the phrase "anti-romantic comedy" was bandied about about the panel just like a badge of recognition. Anti-entertainment is a lot more like it. Another of Greenblatt's goals is "to ascertain if we are able to bring respectability to the [traditional multi-camera live-audience comedy], which appears to possess been, apart from CBS, almost a dirty word." The very first shot over the bow is Whitney (Thursdays at 9:30/8:30c), a showcase for stand-up star Whitney Cummings, playing a crazy version of her comic persona. Regrettably, as frequently happens in these instances, the show largely feels as though an uncomfortable extension of her stage shtick without a penny fresh concerning the situations or even the shrill execution. Cummings even stated at some point, "I love to think about the show as my next [comedy] special." Tonally, it's at odds using the relaxation from the Thursday comedy selection. (Up Through The Night will be a far better fit.) TALL TALES: NBC's quirkiest fall show is obviously the fairy-tale-inspired Grimm, designated for that "cult evening" of Fridays (opposite Fringe and Supernatural at 9/8c), co-produced by Buffy/Angel vet David Greenwalt, who recommended this really is targeted in a slightly larger audience. "It requires a police procedural and type of turns it on its mind, also it requires a storybook story book each week and fractures that." The hero is really a detective (the sadly bland David Giuntoli, a Brandon Routh clone by means of Road Rules) having the ability to discern mythological animals in our midst. The stories are occasionally upended - Greenwalt taunted game titles like "Thinderella" and "The Wolf Who Cried Boy" - and welcome comic relief is supplied by Silas Weir Mitchell (Prison Break) like a cool "large bad wolf." Still, it's difficult to assume this uneasy hybrid achieving a "happily ever after" ending. WHAT'S Inside A Title? NBC is pleading unflattering evaluations by naming its new Thursday evening crime drama (10/9c) following the revered British landmark series Prime Suspect, which made Helen Mirren a star because the driven, abrasive detective Jane Tennison. The American adaptation is not terrible, and Maria Bello is very good because the scrappy Jane Timoney, a brand new You are able to detective fighting sexism at work - most of which has been called back in the almost cartoonishly boorish actions within the pilot episode. The brand new Jane is really a mess in her own personal existence, although not nearly as dark because the British counterpart.
